Jiaohe Ancient City (交河故城) is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in Xinjiang. Built on a 30-meter-high plateau island between two rivers, this 2,300-year-old city was the capital of the ancient Jushi Kingdom and a major Silk Road oasis.

Where is Jiaohe Ancient City?

Jiaohe is 10 km west of Turpan city, in a dramatic natural defensive position.

History & Significance

  • Founded: 2nd century BCE (Han Dynasty period)
  • Abandoned: 14th century CE (Ming Dynasty)
  • Size: 1,650m long, 300m wide, 36 hectares
  • UNESCO: World Heritage Site (2014)

What to See

1. The Main Gate & Avenues

The city had only one gate (south side). The main avenue (7m wide) leads north through the city.

2. Buddhist Stupas & Temples

Over 50 Buddhist temples and stupas, showing Jiaohe was a major Buddhist center.

3. The Palace Area

The northern part of the city, with government buildings and the ruler’s residence.

4. Residential Areas

Mud-brick houses, some two-story, showing how ordinary people lived 2,000 years ago.
