Aksu (阿克苏), meaning “white water” in Uyghur, is a major oasis city in northern Xinjiang. Known for its apples, the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves, and as the gateway to the Taklamakan Desert, Aksu is an underrated gem on the northern Silk Road route.
