Kuqa (库车) is one of Xinjiang’s most historically significant cities, located on the northern Silk Road. As the capital of the ancient Qiuci Kingdom, Kuqa hosts some of China’s most important Buddhist cave art and is a fascinating stop on any Xinjiang travel itinerary.

Kuqa is in central Xinjiang, on the northern edge of the Tarim Basin, about halfway between Urumqi and Kashgar along the Tian Shan mountains.
