Our Experience: Why Autumn is Our Favorite Season

When we first drove into Kanas in late September, we stopped the car every five minutes. The birch forests were pure gold. Not the dull brown-gold of city trees in fall — but a bright, luminous yellow that seemed to glow against the deep blue sky and the snow on the mountain peaks.

Less famous than Kanas, which means fewer tourists. The birch forests here are just as beautiful. There’s also a massive granite peak (Zhongguo No.1 Pit) that glows red at sunset. Budget travelers will appreciate that Keketuohai tickets are slightly cheaper than Kanas.

The entire Ili Valley turns gold in autumn. Poplar trees line the roads. Nalati Grassland is golden rather than green, which is a completely different kind of beautiful. Yining city itself is pleasant — tree-lined streets, a relaxed atmosphere, and excellent food.

Most people think grassland is only green. In autumn, Nalati turns gold and copper. The driving from Nalati to Bayanbulak (swan lake) in autumn is spectacular — golden grassland with snow mountains as the backdrop.
